Understanding the populations of the past: new developments and interdisciplinary perspectives

In the last two decades, we have seen the transformation of many aspects involved in trying to understand how the populations of the past reproduced themselves: the sources used; the topics covered; and even the methods used to address these issues. One of the goals of the Conference is to shed light on the ongoing conversation between history and demography in population studies using different disciplinary perspectives. An additional goal is to develop an enhanced awareness and a more systematic use of the sources and methods available to pursue this goal.

The main focus of the Conference is on new developments related to sources and methods used to study the conditions under which historical populations evolved. Research results may touch upon a variety of topics such as:

  • Immigration and cultural diversity
  • The life course, the formation and dissolution of families and households
  • Population dynamics and social inequalities
  • Gender
  • Mortality and health
  • Space and internal migrations
